Art Genre: Sculpture

I am Reed Hurst, father of 4, grandfather of 16 and recently became a great-grandfather of 1. I have been happily married to my wife Jolene for 48 years.

My wife and I are both native Utahns but lived several years in New Jersey and most recently, Texas where we lived for 18 years. After working in the medical industry for 32 years, I retired in 2014 and in 2016, we moved back to Utah and have settled in Draper and happy to be home.

Toward the end of my career, I began sculpting, a passion I felt for most of my life, but just never made the time to do it. With no formal training, I bought clay and some basic implements and began sculpting. One of the first sculptures I created was displayed in clay at a Christmas festival where 4 people asked how they could acquire a copy. With no experience of how to have a clay original made into a bronze finished piece, I identified and worked closely with a foundry in Texas and had 4 copies made and sold them to those “clients”.

From that point until now, I have been very fortunate to have created several different figurative sculptures, many of which have been purchased. In addition, I have been commissioned to create other pieces, one of which (a bust of William Draper) has been permanently installed in the Draper Historic Park.

I continue to sculpt in my home studio and work closely with foundries in Lehi and Alpine to have my clay originals go through a very complex 8 step, “lost wax” process to create beautiful bronze sculptures. I am fulfilling a life-long passion.
