Bio

Art Genre: Oil Painting

I'm Stephen Richardson. Born and raised in Salt Lake City. Creativity through art has always been a passion of mine since I was a child. Having that desire or need to create something organic that helps me express all the emotions that life brings me has always been deep inside of me. I try to paint subjects that evoke a lot of emotions from the viewer.
I started taking all the art classes I could in high school, community college, and then the University of Utah. Taking workshops later helped me hone some of my skills.

I have been influenced by many of the great artists who have mastered light and shadow like Rembrandt and Vermeer. Followed by a love of the impressionists in which they convey emotions so effortlessly. I strive to combine realism and impressionism and see where each painting takes me. The push and pull of fine details or just a suggestion of details has always intrigued me.

Beyond painters, musicians have been a tremendous influence on my creativity. Without having any musical talents, I can only listen to great musicians as the music in which they create inspires my creativity through painting. I started painting landscapes and cityscapes, but for the last few years, I have been painting mostly musicians. I love the warm and cool light musicians have on them on stage, causing for some very interesting mix of color and tone.

I would eventually like to get back to landscapes at some point, but I'm enjoying painting musicians too much at the moment. We will see where this journey takes me.
