Art Genre: Reclaimed Wood Mosaics

In 2012 I returned to BYU to finish my BFA after 25 years of diapers and PTA. (all wonderful) I knew I needed to quickly settle into a medium and get to work. I had developed a great love for power tools and when I was not busy with painting assignments, I found a beautiful wood shop just mine for the taking in the Harris Fine Arts Center.

It began with me gathering up the leftover scraps that others left behind from framing and other projects. It was so satisfying to organize this chaos into something neat and clean and interesting and soon I became obsessed. I knew where all the "piles" could be found all over campus.

At one point I was meeting with my professor in my studio and we were talking about my paintings. He saw something in the corner of my studio–one of my organized scraps pieces and he asked about it. I explained that it was something I just needed to do and his response was, “Make 10 more of those”. I never looked back and I have been gathering and organizing ever since.

My work is found in the collections of the State of Utah, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Delta Airlines and Salt Lake Community College as well as several private collections. You can find me at David Ericson Gallery in SLC and in Four Lemons Gallery in Holladay Ut.
